Episode 1 – Palermo for an Englishman

LISTEN to the podcast. READ the RnR Grammar. DO the quiz and…. ROCK ON!

In this episode I talk to my good friend Daniel Gandolfi about what he thinks of Palermo. He has visited me a few times here, so I thought I would ask him what he thinks about the city. In this episode you will hear the following words in their correct context:

  • Crammed
  • Pale
  • Hippyish
  • Gloomy
  • Ankles

RnR Grammar Point

In the episode you will notice that Dan describes Palermo as “hippyish”.

We add the suffix “ish” to the end of words to say “more or less”. For example, if I say that I will meet you at “8ish”, that means I will meet you at more or less 8 o’clock (maybe a few minutes before, maybe a few minutes after).

Here are some other examples:

  • “When I went on holiday, it wasn’t hot, but it was hottish – about 20 degrees”.
  • “The tickets for the match weren’t really cheap, but they were cheapish, €20 each”.

IMPORTANT – this is not a formal way write and is generally only expressed in spoken language.

After you listen to the episode, take the quiz below.

Ottimo lavoro Martin. Ho iniziato con il primo episodio. Ha la durata giusta per mantenere l’attezione e i riferimenti grammaticali inseriti nella conversazione sono molto utili..

    • Martman99 says:

Thanks Luigi! πŸ™‚ The sound quality gets better after a few episodes and they are getting gradually longer, I’m doing my best to keep them as short as possible though! πŸ™‚

  10. Helen says:

I browsed the iPhone podcast app and found this programme. I randomly picked and listened to an episode which is about the six-year-old hellraiser who stole women’s underwear probably as a gift to his nan. What a hilarious episode that I could not stop laughing. I wish I have came across this podcast earlier.
I am going to listen to it from episode 1.

    • Martman99 says:

Hi Helen! Thanks for the comment! I’m glad you like the show, you have a lot to catch up on – have fun! πŸ™‚ Remember to follow Rock n Roll English on Facebook and Instagram too! πŸ™‚
