  • He whispered in my ear ‘beat that’
  • I was entered in the competition for Essex studs
  • I was flicking through the paper

RnR Grammar

In today’s show, when Dan was explaining the story about him entering a talent competition, he said:

“I had been practising my football skills for days”

As mentioned in the show, this is the Past Perfect Continuous. It is a real RnR tense and is obviously very similar to the Past Perfect – where we talk about 2 actions in the past and one comes before the other one (in this story, the 2 events are Dan at the competition and practising for days which obviously happened earlier).

Anyway, we use the Past Perfect Continuous here to stress the DURATION of the action. As he had been practising FOR DAYS, so it was a long action!

Use this term when you speak and your English will ROCK! ?

When you have listened to the podcast and read the above, then you’re ready for the quiz below! ?

Good luck!

It’s my birthday though so you have to forgive me! 😉 Anyway, it will be there tomorrow! 🙂

I'm Martin. I'm an English Teacher. That's about as interesting as it gets.

    .Hello! I’m Meg from Japan.
I’ve just given five stars rating on your podcast review.
I love Martin because you’ve created such a funny English learning podcast.
However I’ve got to say that if Dan the man were not there with you, your podcast wouldn’t be funny as it is now,
I mean you two are like Sherlock and Watson to me.
I’m sure this quote that I’ve plagiarised from a review of TV series Sherlock applies to you two.
The greatest strength of Rock n’ Roll English is the greatest friendship that lies at the heart of them.

  2. Letícia says:

    Martin and Dan, you rock!
In less than two weeks I managed to listen to every episode of this podcast. Listening to you makes me feel happy.
There are a few things that are clear to me. First of all, Dan, in the early episodes, when he was no more than a guest, soudend more comfortable and happy then he does now that he is definitely a key part of this. Secondly, you are so competitive that even your choices of South American countries show a great deal of rivalry. On this note, I’d like to let you know that it will be wonderful to meet with you if you come to Rio sometime.
Lastly, I wish you all the happiness in your relationship, but you should know that you were my first podcast crush and that you have broken my heart…
Joking (or jokes?) apart, I will always love you. Both of you!
    Yours sincerely,

Hi Leticia! 🙂 Thanks for your message, really happy that you like the podcast! 🙂 Your observations seem to be correct… although I would hate to go back and listen to the early episodes now as I’m sure we both sound stupid! And yes we are extremely competitive! 😉 It would be wonderful to meet you too, it is my dream to go to Rio, so hopefully one day I’ll meet you there! 🙂 In the meantime, keep on listening and keep on rocking! 😉 P.S. We love you too! 🙂
