The best site to get FREE English speaking practice

The best way to learn a English is to speak it – it’s no secret, everyone knows it. The problem is, you live in another country and have no opportunities to speak it, right? Well I have a solution for you!

The site allows you to meet mother tongue speakers and converse with them via a language exchange and the best part is….it’s FREE!

What is a language exchange?

Very easy question to answer… it’s an exchange of languages! You find someone who is learning your language, then you can speak on Skype or meet in person and you speak your language for the first half of the conversation, then English for the second half of the conversation.

You both pay NOTHING and you both get SPEAKING PRACTICE. And remember… it’s FREE!

Making friends

it is a great way for you to meet new friends, which is even more important if you have just arrived in a new city. It’s not easy to make friends with local people in a new city when you don’t know the language well, but this site is a great way as it puts you in contact with people with someone that is learning your language so you are in the same boat. I have made many friends from this site which I talk about in the section below.

My Personal Experience

When I moved to Rome, the site really helped me make friends as I didn’t know anyone. Obviously as I am English, I am quite cold and reserved, so it was a bit strange meeting someone I didn’t know (it was like a blind date), but when you meet someone that you get on with, it really is great fun.

I’ll be honest; I’ve also had bad experiences. I have met some strange people and some boring people (I am very boring, so to be MORE boring than me is really something special!). I remember one language exchange I did, let’s call her “Maria” for this story – the conversation went like this:

Me:        Hi, nice to meet you. Do you like living in Rome?

Maria:   Yes.

Me:        What do you do?

Maria:   I’m a student.

Me:        Have you ever been to London?

Maria:   No.

It didn’t seem like she liked the language, as she wasn’t talking much! If you find yourself in a situation like this, do what I did and make up an excuse and go away. Simple. Don’t be discouraged though, as there are many people that DO want to speak.

How the site works

It is very easy and I’m sure you don’t need me to explain it, but just in case, here is the explanation:

  1. Go to click on “Sign Up”.
  2. Create a profile. You need to create a profile where you describe a little bit about yourself (why you are interested in learning English, what your hobbies are etc.)
  3. Search for a conversation partner. It will ask you where you live, what your mother tongue language is and what language you want to learn, then give you all the results of people that live in your area that match the specification. Obviously try to find people that are a similar age to you and have similar interests.
    • If you live in a small town where there are no English speakers, you can find people in all over the world and speak to them on Skype!
  4. Contact conversation partner. Once you have found someone, send them a message. Include something from their personal profile in the message, as it shows that you are not just copying and pasting the same message to everyone!

Really, it’s so easy that my grandmother could do it!

Just remember, the site is called “Conversation Exchange”, so don’t be like Maria and remember to exchange the conversation! 😉

RnR Grammar

In the sentence:

Don’t be discouraged though, as there are many people that DO want to speak.

The word DO, is used to add emphasis to the sentence. It has no meaning in this sentence and if you take it away, the sentence doesn’t change, it just helps to emphasise the fact that some people DO want to speak! 😉

I'm Martin. I'm an English Teacher. That's about as interesting as it gets.
